MONKEY SEE, MONKEY DO

SKYLARK

BACK

Kathmandu, Nepal, June 27, 1994

She's a slightly quirky and entirely lovable doggie.  She's a very good communicator, telepathic, if you like.  I suppose all dog owners feel like this about their pets...  Sky just stands in front of you and kind of stares at you, and you start getting a picture in your mind of what it is she wants from you.  Bhallu can do that, too, but his range is more limited.
Skylark lately has also started playing with the monkeys.  When she first came here, Sky used to chase them and keep them a bit at bay, which for us wasn't such a bad thing.  Now she stands perfectly still in the middle of the lawn and lets the monkeys, especially the teenage ones, play on top and under her as if she were a tree, rummaging through her fur.  At other times a monkey sometimes rides her back holding her ears, or Sky runs after the monkeys and nudges them with her nose, very gently, and they play with her head.
Unfortunately we have not been able to capture any of this on film.  It happens all too suddenly and ends before you can grab a camera and focus it.  But friends who have observed Sky playing with the monkeys like this are quite amazed.  You don't see two different species playing with each other, and dogs don't usually mix with monkeys.

Festival of Tihar
"
A major holiday in November in Kathmandu.  On one of its days dogs are worshipped since they are one of the animals that attend on the god of death.  They're garlanded, and fed, and their foreheads are adorned with vermillion powder.  This happens to all the dogs, whether they belong to somebody or not.  On other days crows are worshipped, then cows and bullocks are worshipped, on another day the goddess of wealth, the tools of one's trade, still on another day.  It's a lovely holiday."
